My Bug List

My Bug List:
  1. When the Starbucks at 13th and 16th moved to their new location, they added a drive-thru, and now when I order my drink inside, it takes much longer.
    1. The employees are encouraged to get drinks to the people in the drive-thru faster than those inside.
  2. At the intersection of 13th and University Ave, it is nearly impossible to make a right turn because it is a “no turn on red” intersection and when the turning light is green, pedestrians are also allowed to cross the road.
    1. You have to wait for all of the students to cross the road even though you have a green light because pedestrians have right of way. Then, by the time all of the students have crossed, the turning light is now red.
  3. It takes an incredibly long time to pick up my boss’ son from car pick at Newberry Elementary School.
    1. All of the children have to stay inside because they say that it is always too hot or too cold for them to sit outside, so they have teachers outside with speakers to yell the names of the students from outside to inside where a different teacher has to find the kid and then send them outside. Sometimes they hear the wrong name or they forget to find a student and it clogs up the car pick up line.
  4. It is difficult to find a parking spot on UF Campus even if you purchase a parking decal. If you can find a spot, it’s usually far from where you need to actually go.
    1. UF sells more parking decals than it has parking spots and there are always people looking for a parking spot.
  5. Apple brand phone chargers constantly break because there is no thick protective section between the cable and the charger point, but if you buy off-brand cables with this section, they don’t always work correctly with your phone.
    1. Apple wants you to buy their cable instead of other companies cables but also profits from your Apple cable breaking and you having to buy a new one.
  6. It takes twenty minutes to get from my house, in Newberry, to work, on Tower Road if I leave at 8:40 but it takes forty minutes if I leave between 8:00 and 8:30. So I have to risk being late if I leave later or spend twice as much time in the car if I leave earlier.
    1. More people have to be at work or school before 9 than those who can be there after 9, so the roads are more congested, especially near schools or hospitals.
  7. Traffic is always congested at the corner of Tower Road and Newberry Road, and this is also a “dead zone” for my cell service so my calls always drop or I lose radio service, which makes the congestion even more frustrating.
    1. This is a popular intersection in Gainesville with businesses at all 4 corners of the intersection. It is also the last intersection before the northbound entrance to I-75 so people are constantly trying to shift into the right lane.
  8. Auditions for UF Concert Bands take place on the first day of class, but if you are borrowing an instrument, you cannot pick it up until the first day of classes for that semester, so there is no time to prepare for the audition.
    1. The equipment manager is worried about people damaging instruments or dropping out of the class and not returning the instruments when they do so.
  9. My mother owns a children’s consignment store and people will often bring in clothes to sell without having washed or checked them for stains or damage beforehand. This makes the buying process more time consuming and uncomfortable for the person going through their items.
    1. It is inconvenient for the person selling the items to clean them if they are simply going to throw them away or donate them if they cannot be sold.
  10. The Publix in Jonesville always runs out of chicken tenders around lunchtime and the only way to guarantee that they will have some for pick up is if you call ahead.
    1. Chicken tenders are in high demand around lunch time and the deli would rather run out of them and ask customers to wait for them to be freshly made than have leftovers after the lunch rush that they have to throw away and lose money on.
  11. People who do not wave or acknowledge you when you stop or slow down to let them into your lane of traffic.
    1. Many drivers think that they should be able to go wherever they want on the road and do not think that they need to thank the person who went out of their way to make the other person's driving experience better.
  12. During the summer, there are less bus routes and it is harder to get around town without paying for Ubers or Lyfts.
    1. There are less students on campus so they do not have as much monetary support from the university to support the bus routes.
  13. At the intersection of 43rd and 53rd, the light is only sometimes a “no turn on red”. It is nearly impossible to predict when it is going to be a “no turn on red” light so I am never prepared for what to do.
    1. I honestly do not know why this happens.
  14. Most of the public parks in Gainesville close at sundown so it is difficult to find outdoor places to exercise at night.
    1. Gainesville probably does not want to pay to have security for the parks after dark and there are likely less patrols available to check these areas.
  15. You cannot bike on the trails at San Felasco even though it is one of the most well marked trails in Gainesville.
    1. Lots of people walk on the trails and they probably think that having both bicyclists and pedestrians on the trail is dangerous.
  16. There is no biking lane on University Avenue so bikers are forced to ride on the sidewalk which is frustrating to both bikers and pedestrians.
    1. It is probably expensive to add a bike lane and it is a high traffic area so this may be inconvenient for the city to implement.
  17. There are no blue lights on fraternity row.
    1. They are probably expensive to build because of the technology and construction costs.
  18. Traffic is standstill on 39th Avenue, near the I-75, in the mornings.
    1. There are two elementary schools that start at the same time and a prominent Interstate entrance so lots of people need to use that road, and is still only a one-lane road.
  19. Utility prices are really high in Gainesville and there is usually little explanation for why they charge certain amounts.
    1. GRU practically has a monopoly on electric and water in Gainesville and so they can charge whatever prices they want.
  20. The Chik-fil-A on campus does not accept Chik-fil-A gift cards or coupons.
    1. The one on campus is overseen by Aramark and so they do not have to accept gift cards or coupons even though they should.

My Reflection:

I think that I found this assignment increasingly difficult as the list went on because I try to maintain
a positive outlook in my day to day life. For example, when there is bad traffic, I will try to use that
time to call my grandparents or listen to a new podcast, which I usually would not have done if the
traffic had not been so congested. I also think that I struggled to find things that bug me in Gainesville
because I have lived here my entire life and have struggled with the fact that I would be staying here
for college. There were lots of things that I used to complain about in regards to the city that I now
appreciate or work to appreciate because I know that I will be staying for a few more years. I genuinely
try to find positives and so even though I knew this list was full of minute changes that make my day to
day life slightly more frustrating, I felt guilty for listing them because I wanted to see a positive side to
what I was complaining about.

  1. Hey Alex I really agree with you on your bug list. I love the points you made and you was really specific. I am really impress with all the things that bugs you. I like when you said that Chik fil a do not accept no gift card or coupons to help us out to save our money. I feel like how would we improve on the bug list is to always figure out what people are in need. That we should find out what people need the most in this world.

  2. Hi Alex, great job with being very specific in your bug list. I have noticed the same problem with turning right at the light on University and 13th Street. I find it interesting that almost of your "bugs" have to do with something specifically in Gainesville, and I think this is probably because you have always lived in Gainesville. I liked you noted how you always try to have a positive outlook, which made it harder for you to come up with your list, but this also made me wonder if entrepreneurs in general tend to more critical of the world around them.

  3. Hi Alex! Your reflection on this assignment said it all! I had the same difficulties as you did in the completion of this assignment. The guiltiness really ate me alive on some of them! However, I think identifying these bugs is a very important step in creating new innovations. My favorite items on your bug list were numbers 12, 16, 17- I think you could do something about those!! Good luck and thanks for sharing!

  4. Hi Alex! The bug that really resonated with me was #2. That is my biggest frustration ever! Its so annoying when you can't turn on red at nearly any of the lights. I feel like it causes so much traffic. Your bugs were very specific, and you had a great explanation for all of them. I felt like when I was writing my bugs it was sometimes difficult to explain it. I also felt that I came off as someone who complains a lot or doesn't appreciate things when I was writing my list. I like that you said you try to have a positive outlook.

  5. Alex, I like to see that i am not the only person with quite a few traffic related bugs on my bug list. It seems as though transportation in a congested city can be the most frustrating thing. You should come visit southern California if you think traffic in a small city like Gainesville is bad! For your bug about the iPhone charger, i kept getting fed up with apple products, so i switched to the Google Pixel 2xl a few years ago and couldn't be happier. There is also an employee from google that on his free time tests USB-C cables that work with the pixels and posts his findings online so consumers know which charging cables will not damage your phone. Maybe there is someone doing something similar for iPhones?

  6. Hey Alex, I really liked your list. I appreciated the fact that a lot of your bugs were very relatable. It's great that you were able to have a lot of bugs related to things in Gainesville. This shows that even though Gainesville has been your home for a while, you are still able to look at your environment and figure out the things that are wrong with it. I also liked the fact that even though you experience a lot of these bugs, you are able to find the silver lining and make the best of the situations you find yourself in.
